Festivities and the Fourth

Happy Fourth of July! This week has been excellent so far. At work I am making progress in my task of troubleshooting the system of RNA isolation, which has been very time consuming so far. Every time I isolate RNA from a sample it is almost always degraded, and now I have to figure out why. I have my first lab meeting on Monday, where I have to present my week's work to everybody. I'm a little nervous but I think I'll be alright. Things are good here at Harvard. I went to Fire+Ice last night and had an amazing dinner, and I still feel full today. I was planing on taking the swim test, which I need to take so I can row, yesterday but the pool was closed. I went to see the fireworks tonight which were some of the best that I have ever seen. They were perfectly in sync with the music and were spectacular overall. Loved them. Hi Sam, How was your fourth? Did you see any fireworks?

First Week

This first week has been great, except that my phone got wet and wont turn on now. Working at the lab is awesome, I love it. Its taken me a week to learn how to do things, like isolating RNA from tissue samples, running a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and casting a gel and running the samples on the gel. My favorite part is isolating RNA from tissue samples. I get to use liquid nitrogen (AWESOME) to zap freeze the samples. Yesterday I got my MGH ID card activated finally, which lets me up the elevator and into the lab. Which is helpful, this way I don't have to ask someone to let me in. I will be going to my first lab meeting on monday and will try to post on how it goes. The weather is finally nicer now, after it rained for 5 days straight. I still want to try to do two posts a week but again we'll see how that goes. Go Red Sox! More secret messages: I can't wait to see transformers 2, not very secret after all.

Arriving at Harvard

Last night was my first night staying at Harvard and so far its been great. I've gotten to know some of the people on my floor and they are all nice and fun too. My dorm room is gigantic (bigger than my room at home, which makes sense because its a double, but still) My roommate hasn't arrived yet and I look forward to meeting him later today. Harvard is very different from high school, most notably the co-ed dorms. Also a head's up for anyone, don't try to play frisbee on Harvard Yard, you will get three adults running outside at once to yell at you. A fun experience on your first day. I have to remember to buy my books for class, so hopefully by saying this i'll remember. That's about it for now, I might try to do this twice a week, we'll see how things go.

First Post

This is the first post, so... the action is a little slow. But here's a little intro to this blog:

I applied to a program at my school called Students on the Forefront of Science and was awarded an internship working at Massachusetts General Hospital this summer. I will be working in the Pancreatic Cancer Research Lab, focusing on the Hippo Pathway. And since I haven't started yet, that is all I know about what I will be doing right now. I visited the Hospital today to pick up my Mass General ID, and hand in some forms. So I am even more excited now to begin now that I have my ID, which makes me very very excited. And that about does it for this first post, which turned out to be longer than I thought it would be... And you stay classy San Diego.
